My Personal Top 10s :: James Blake
My Favourite Artists :: Beastie Boys
I First discovered … them as a kid, everyone knew who they were. I went to a boarding school, we all shared tapes, I was given Power by Ice T, Yo! Bumrush The Show by Public Enemy and Licensed To Ill by Beastie Boys to borrow. All 3 shook my world, up to that point my only knowledge of Hip-Hop was Breakin’ 2 - Electric Boogaloo. Those 3 albums were a great push into the world of Hip-Hop, Hip-Hop was in a great state at that time, I was a lucky kid.
I realised I was a fan … when they released Paul’s Boutique, an album I adore. I got it on tape and I’d rewind it constantly, trying to learn all the words, fucking the tape up in the process - I was so happy when I finally discovered CDs a few years later. I still know all the words now. Beasties Geek, yo!
The high point for me as a fan … Silly one this, but … If I’m ever feeling low on confidence or just flat out depressed, I can rely on their music to cheer me up and make me feel like I’m the mutha-fuckin’ man. Only other person who is capable of making me feel this way with their music? Prince. That’s the best compliment I can give the Beasties.
The low point for me as a fan … MCA getting cancer. It also sucks that I have never had the privilege of seeing them live.
Best tracks :: Alive, Hello Brooklyn, Sabotage, Sure Shot, Pass The Mic, Gratitude, She’s On It, Make Some Noise, Tadlock’s Glasses, Get It Together, 3 MCs and One DJ, The Move, Jimmy James, Stand Together, etc etc
Worst tracks :: Mmmmmmmmm, not sure, I’ve been sat here for 15 minutes trying to think of songs for this and I can’t think of any. I type a song title out and then end up deleting it, even at their worst there is something appealing about the Beasties’ songs.
Best album :: Paul’s Boutique. What can be said about this album? A true classic. I’ve heard this album so many times and I never tire of it. The clever use of samples and the way the album is sequenced make you notice something new every time.
Worst Album :: I’ve gotta cheat here and name an EP instead, so the honour goes to … Some Old Bullshit. Kind’ve a no brainer, right?
I wish they’d work with … Chuck D, Run & DMC (RIP Jam Master Jay) and LL Cool J. I’d love nothing more than to hear a proper ol’ school hip-hop album with guest appearances by some of the boys contemporaries. In all honesty, it’d a dream come true.
Have they still got it? Without a doubt, yes. Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2 is a stronger record than To The 5 Boroughs, which is remarkable when you consider how long MCA, Ad-Rock & Mike D have been going. Can you name any other Hip-Hop artists who’ve been going as long as them that are still relevant, still putting out albums that people want to hear and still passionate about their music? I hope we get to hear another Beasties album some time in the future, the only thing standing in the way of us enjoying another is MCA’s cancer. I know he’ll beat it, I pray for him every day.
My Personal Top 50 albums of all time.*
I don’t claim to be the authority on music, but these are my own personal Top 50 albums, and you’ll notice some big names - Classics - missing. The most notable being The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Blondie, Bowie, Springsteen, etc. All of whom I love, although I lean towards individual songs rather than full albums for some reason, but this list isn’t about the Top 50 artists. It’s about the albums I never tire of, the albums I play obsessively, the albums I find filler free.
Feel free to agree, disagree, and straight up scratch your head.

My Personal Top 10s :: Beastie Boys
In all honesty, it’s pretty much impossible for me to write a definitive Top 10 when it comes to the Beastie Boys - they’ve been in my life as long as I can remember. I was born in ‘77 and Licensed To Ill came out in ‘86, I was 7 years old - the perfect time for a music and tv obsessed kid. I could write down ten Top 10s when it comes to the Beasties, they are one of the few groups that I play at least once a week, as far back as I can remember it’s always been this way. And like The Cure, Prince and Deftones I can go through periods where I will listen to nothing but them for weeks on end - that’s pretty much obsession, right?
As I said up top, a Beastie Boys Top 10 constantly changes, this is just my top 10 right now. The only three certainties I’ve ever had as far as the Beasties are concerned are these …
My Personal Top 5s :: Ridley Scott Movies
1. Alien
2. Matchstick Men
3. Blade Runner
4. American Gangster
5. Body Of Lies
It’s safe to say that this post has come about purely because I, like so many others, have watched the Prometheus trailer repeatedly this weekend just gone. Which led to the inevitable … rewatching Alien on BluRay. Anyway, as we all know, I love my lists so I couldn’t resist going back over Ridley’s filmography and compiling this top 5. Most of you will notice that Gladiator and Kingdom Of Heaven are both missing from the list - which isn’t to say they’re not good films - and the truth of it is that, while I do admire them in regards to the ambition shown in making such big movies, I have never really been a fan of movies like Gladiator, Kingdom Of Heaven, Troy, Braveheart, etc.
As always, feel free to reply with your own Top 5s.
My Personal Top 10s :: Outkast*
*My favourite Outkast moment is Big Boi’s verse on Chonkyfire (1.30-2.05) … that piano part gets me every time, if you haven’t heard it, I implore you to check it out.
